The origin of 小倉アイス【the Japanese pronunciation is Ogura ice which means Azuki bean ice cream(red bean ice cream)】
In 1915,on a Sunday in the summer, the founder of みつばち [Mitsubachi],嶋田当与[SHIMADA Toyo]thought that wasting leftover Azuki beans was not agood idea
so she stored them in a wooden bucket for making ice cream.
The next morning she opened the lid to find a frozen coating on the beans and decided to eat them.
She had never tasted anything like it.
But they were too sweet so she desugared the beans, put them back in the bucket and then mixed them with some ice cream.
After 10minutes,20minutes and 30minutes passed,She opened the lid again to find a glistening mixture.
She tasted it and found that it was surprisingly delicious.
Wanting others to sample the mixture she brought the Azuki bean ice cream over to the hair dressing salon which was directly opposite her shop and it was happily eaten at once.
However when asked what it was called she didn't know.
Kokuryo, who was the master of Tutahorii which was behind her shop helped to name the Azuki bean ice cream.
He said that Azuki bean 羊羹[Yokan]which was a thick jellied dessert made of red bean paste, agar, and sugar, was called [Ogura Yokan],so it is a good idea to call
the Azuki bean ice cream"小倉アイス[Ogura ice]".
Then the Azuki ice cream was named as 小倉アイス[Ogura ice].
